I think one thing interesting to look at in making this game is the type distribution - we obviously aim for at the very least every type being represented in a couple of Pokémon, and each of those designs being different and significant. So here we can talk, from a type angle, what we want to see.
I think a defensive bug type could be awesome; we've not seen much in the way of bug type used for its defensive merits throughout the generations (though a couple of examples may come to mind) and in particular with their added fairy resistance there's a lot of reason to consider it - this being said, locus-pokus in some ways fulfils this. On a similar front, a defensive ice-type would be interesting. Although it has been done before, since in BAM it has 3 resistances rather than 1, it's somewhat of a realistic prospect in spite of the absence of hail. Ice/Ground makes a pretty good partner to Flying-types that don't share its weaknesses to Fire/Steel, due to being immune to Electric and neutral to both Rock and Ice. The trouble with Ice is having 4 weaknesses and few partner types that help with more than one of these. Water and Fire I recollect are the only ones that resist 2 or more of Rock/Steel/Fire/Fighting. Ice/Fairy also looks kind of nice, in spite of the 4x steel weakness; 5 resistances and an immunity with only 2 weaknesses to probably common attacking types (Fire/Rock) is actually surprisingly good. The other naturally 'good' defensive types - Water, Steel - don't pair too well with it (in fact ice/steel's pretty atrocious, although Ice/Water isn't too bad with the added grass resistance). Fighting seems to have a somewhat similar issue, but Bug I feel works with a lot of types nicely. Grass/Fighting might be a really good approach on the fighting-type end, due to slidequake [landslide+earthquake] resistance. Bug/Dark would be a cool offensively focussed type to make maybe, although it has issues with both fighting- and fairy-types. Hell, I just love bug types I think :> they don't get enough love; only bug+steel/fighting/fire have ever been notable type combinations in tiers that have seen high levels of play, as well as electric/flying/rock/ghost in niche cases [galvantula, yanmega, crustle, shedinja] that are mostly related to hazards or wonder guard. Ground, Fairy, Psychic [Seen in Violet on butterfree so it's cool and actually has some love so I guess we needn't do it...], Dragon [dragonfly anyone?], and dark would all be cool options we've not used yet, as well as pure bug, and even bug/poison and bug/flying could be interesting to make work [bug/poison has 3 4x resistances actually rofl.. (fairy grass fighting)].
I think if we have a sort of ice/ground pivot then we shouldn't make a water/ground one too since it's basically just plain better; although it has a 4x grass weakness, it's a rare and difficult to exploit weakness, whilst ice/ground's fighting/fire/steel weaknesses all are relatively significant vulnerabilities, although I guess steel is on a similar level to grass offensively. Psychic/Poison sounds weird and funny, and I want an offensive soaring Steel/Flying type which sounds like fun to me, and levitating ground types sound like fun (flygon and claydol coming to mind here..) which is an interesting aspect for raze-blockers/spike-immune pokes to have, and helps balance out the power of our limestone poke even moreso.
